There were 63 quat'z'arts balls between 1892 and 1966. The initial ball, which took place in a room rented for the occasion, was completed by two competitions of workshops, dressing room and parade. Each workshop of the school of fine arts presented, in a lodge built within the school, a living painting according to the chosen theme and then participated in a parade on a tank built by the students.

From the school of fine arts, the workshops went up through the betting streets to the hall where the ball itself was held. The procession reached in the early morning the wash, the final destination of any academic career, returned to the Latin quarter by the carousel bridge and finally in the school of fine arts before dispersion.
