The exiled kings are actually a single little king from an imaginary Balkan state, dethroned by a revolution and seeking refuge in Paris. He is surrounded by a group of loyal followers, dreaming of a triumphant restoration, but eventually grows tired of the life of pleasures led in the capital. The local color that enriches the book is largely due to the tumultuous affairs of the small Balkan state. The novel should be considered less as a continuous story and more as a series of episodes, intended to highlight the inevitable decline to which exile condemns the main character and many of the characters around him.
